Your Excellency,
On July 19, 2010, Rashid Emmanuel and Sajid Masih were shot by Muslim extremists before the District and Sessions Court of Faisalabad. We are shocked to hear that the extremists thereby took justice into their own hands. The two Christians, accused of blaspheming the Prophet Mohammed and of thereby violating the “Blasphemy Laws”, had thus been forced to defend themselves in court. The sweeping accusations could not be proven.
The “Blasphemy Laws” violate basic human rights principles, in particular the right to freely practice one’s religion. We therefore call for a thorough investigation of the murder of both Christians and the total curtailment of lynch justice, which sadly occurs time and again in your country. Furthermore, as a matter of urgency, we ask you to see to it that the inhuman Blasphemy Laws are abolished and that religious liberty is guaranteed.
Yours sincerely and respectfully, |
